Distribution of scholarship awards is made through the Church's Scholarship Committee. This committee reviews all applications and makes decisions based on the information submitted and the revenue available for each scholarship through endowments or award donations. This review is generally made during the month of August when scholarship recipients are identified.
Questions about any aspect of the scholarship program and High School Award should be directed to the chairperson of the scholarship committee. Our current chairperson is Dr. James Hawkins.
Any member of Second Baptist Church of Ypsilanti who has a financial need and plans to attend a college, university or vocational school can apply for a scholarship. To be considered for the scholarship, the applicant MUST complete the SBC Scholarship Application Form, available for download here or in the church office, and return it by the established deadline. (The deadline will be determined each year).
Students graduating must inform the church secretary of their anticipated graduation date. Doing so, and meeting the eligibility criteria, will automatically guarantee you as a recipient of the Second Baptist Church High School Award (if funds are available).
Our Scholarship Committee is actively engaged in generating fundraising projects to enhance the church's scholarship program. The committee's major fundraising initiative is a banquet held annually in the month of June. This event, "An Evening for Education: Encouraging Educational Excellence", showcases our students who will be pursuing their education at a post-secondary institution.
Personal donations to support this church's scholarship program are encouraged. Donations will be accepted at any time during the year.
For many years Second Baptist Church of Ypsilanti has been providing financial support to eligible members who desired to seek post-secondary study at Washtenaw Community College, Eastern Michigan University or a vocational institution. This initiative was started by the late pastor, Rev. Dr. Booker T. Hopkins who understood the importance and value of an education.
This page provides information to interested members about the the type of scholarship support available through the Second Baptist Church. It describes in great detail criteria for the following scholarships: The Washtenaw Community College B.T. & G.L. Hopkins Endowment Scholarship, Eastern Michigan University Endowment and the High School Award.
